  • Good news story

Throughout April we’re #CelebratingSocialCare and all the great work happening across the sector. We asked you to send in your good news stories and we’ll be sharing these throughout the month. Today we hear about some impactful care initiatives and some more award winners!

Celebrating a milestone in disability arts

IMPACT Theatre and Outreach Network, based at the IMPACT Community Arts Centre in Perivale, recently celebrated 25 years of providing high-quality performing and creative arts opportunities for people living with a learning disability.

Founded in 1999, IMPACT is an inclusive arts organisation and social care provider with a difference. Its creative day service runs five days a week, supporting around 60 neurodiverse performers and artists to explore and express themselves in ways that challenge stereotypes and celebrate ability.

From their immersive theatre experiences to the much-loved 'Oscar nights' – events that celebrate the talents and achievements of members – IMPACT’s approach to day care combines creativity with care, social impact with personal empowerment. In 2023, their immersive showcase of dance, poetry, music, and art was featured at the prestigious Southbank Centre. And just a few months later, in December, a group of performers had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform for King Charles during his visit to Ealing Broadway. Their upcoming event, In Our World – An Evening of Culture, set for July 2025, is set to be another highlight, bringing the community together in a celebration of creativity

Behind the scenes is a passionate, dedicated team, many of whom are volunteers. Their contribution was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, a testament to the impact they’ve had over the years. The IMPACT team continues to raise the profile of disability arts while delivering care and support that makes a real difference.

Sitting down with veterans

Spellman Care, a provider of high-quality care homes, has announced the launch of its veterans’ café initiative at four of its locations. This project follows the company's accreditation as the UK's second full veteran friendly care home group by the Veteran Friendly Framework and builds on the success of special pilot veterans’ cafes held during Care Â鶹ŮÀÉ Open Week 2024. These sessions were a key part of Spellman Care's push to become recognised as veteran friendly, where they demonstrated their commitment to creating inclusive and supportive communities for veterans within their homes.

The veterans’ cafes will provide a dedicated space for veterans, their families, and the wider community to connect, socialise, and enjoy an afternoon of refreshments and camaraderie.

They have so far enjoyed three café sessions which happened in January, February and March. Their next session is scheduled for April 29 at Ghyll Royd Care Â鶹ŮÀÉ.

Nicola Cromwell, one of Spellman Care’s Armed Forces Champions, said:

We are thrilled to launch these veterans' cafes. These cafes will provide a valuable opportunity for individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences and build a strong sense of community.
